A poorly written textbook might be a reasonable excuse for why you couldn’t learn the material.
A bus that runs late every so often might be to blame for why you are sometimes late for work.
A teacher that seems to be a tough grader is a pretty good justification for why you got a C or D.
But if you make that excuse, lay such blame, or accept the justification, you have given away all your power to see how you can improve the situation.
Are your explanations reasonable? Probably, but your complaints don’t change anything.
If the text is confusing, go find another one.
If the bus tends to run late, take an earlier bus, even if it means you’ll be early for work.
If the teacher is a difficult grader, ask for an explanation of his or her expectations, study harder, or look into switching classes.
What happens is now in your hands.
You can regain power by taking control and accepting 100% responsibility for everything in which you are involved.
This is among the hardest success strategies to implement, because it requires a change in how you think about the world and how you behave.
