WAVE In Middle Grades is a tailor-made program model that meets the developmental needs of young adolescents, typically in grades 6-8.
During those critical years when many students make the fateful decision to leave school, the WAVE In Middle Grades curriculum[.pdf] concentrates on school success, preparation for high school, and, eventually, for the world of work. Lessons introduce concepts of responsibility, decision-making, choices and consequences through hands-on activities and teamwork.
Independent studies have shown that WAVE's school-based programs improve attendance, build skills for success in school and the workplace, and keep kids in school.
WAVE also helps middle schools establish a youth leadership association[.pdf] that reinforces the skills learned in a WAVE In Middle Grades class and gives students an opportunity to confront challenges, experience succes, gain recognition, and feel the impact that today's work has on tomorrow's achievements.
Any school can implement aWAVE In Middle Grades program using its own local teachers who will be offered ongoing professional development and technical assistance by the WAVE's national staff.
WAVE In Middle Grades was developed with support from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, American Honda Foundation, JCPenney’s, American Express, and USF&G.
