WAVE In Communities

WAVE In Communities is a dropout recovery program that helps school dropouts gain education credentials, improve their employability, and find jobs.

Any community-based organization, faith-based organization, college, or local workforce council can implement the program using its own local staff or volunteers who will be offered ongoing professional development and technical assistance by WAVE's national staff.

WAVE offers a 120-lesson Job Readiness Curriculum[.pdf] that covers:
bullet making career decisions
bullet preparing resumes
bullet interviewing
bullet maintaining regular attendance and punctuality
bullet demonstrating positive attitudes and behaviors
bullet presenting appropriate appearance
bullet exhibiting good interpersonal relations
bullet completing tasks effectively

For sample lessons from the curriculum, visit the Free Resources section.

WAVE also helps local staff establish a youth leadership association[.pdf] that reinforces skills learned in the program and gives the young person an opportunity to confront challenges, experience succes, gain recognition, and feel the impact that today's work has on tomorrow's achievements.

Independent studies have shown that WAVE In Communities improves employment and educational achievement.

"I have always loved learning and school. I was a successful student until 1998, when my life changed forever. I was abducted; therefore I became reclusive and angry. School was the last place I wanted to be.

I tried to complete my education through a home-schooling program, but I still couldn't focus on my studies. At 17, I realized I was headed in the wrong direction.

From my first experience of walking in the door [at WAVE] I was welcomed with open arms. It taught me to be a professional woman. They not only helped me get my GED, they helped me start over. They helped me regain confidence in myself, which is priceless.
